Professor Leonid Ushkalov Ukrainian Literature and Journalism Department takes a special place in Ukraine among the educational and scientific departments of its profile. This is mainly due to the fact that its activity is based on the scientific, pedagogical, literary, and creative principles of Leonid Ushkalov (the department took his name in 2019).

These principles are concerned with working with primary sources, interpretation of artistic and aesthetic phenomena involving a wide historical and literary context, breaking stereotypes in the reinterpretation of the history of 19th and 20th-century literature. This approach is important not only in scientific research but also in the teaching process – along with the openness to experiment and innovation – it takes literary education to the highest level of professional training for both: literature teacher/lector and creative writer.

Our graduates work not only in education but also in related areas – journalism and publishing, moreover biographies of Ukrainian famous writers (such as Oksana Boyko, Alina Borshchova, Serhii Zhadan, Yaroslava Ivchenko, Natalka Maslova, Rostyslav Melnykiv, Olena Rybka, Sashko Ushkalov, etc.) and activities of literary groups «Chervona Fira», «Club Ye», «Zakharpolis MM» are associated with the department. Alongside teaching literary, journalistic, and editorial disciplines, the department initiates presentations of literary novelties and meetings with leading writers, also famous critics and scientists, such events become masterclasses for our students.

The Department carries out its scientific work within the project topic «Patterns of Development of Ukrainian Literature from Antiquity to the Сontemporary» (0119U002298, UkrNTEI). Also, the Department provides postgraduate and doctoral studies, publishes the journal «The Scientific Notes of H. S. Skovoroda Kharkiv National Pedagogical University. Literary studies» (editor-in-chief – Ph. D., D. Litt., Prof. L. Harmash).
