On April 2-3, 2025, the 5-th International Scientific Conference ‘Arguments of Modern Philology: Ethics of Care’ took place at Hryhoriy Skovoroda Kharkiv National Pedagogical University.
The way to peace lies in social changes and movements that tend to create an egalitarian cosmopolitan community of the 21st century, beyond the state borders and races. Different versions of these movements are depicted and/or analysed in fiction, cinema, philosophy, languages, mass media, art, methods of education etc. The theoretical foundation of the ethics of care was formulated in the concept of ecofeminism in 1980s (Françoise d’Eaubonne) and developed in the 21st century in the USA, Canada, Australia (Carol Gilligan, Margaret Atwood, Ariel Salleh), in works of African and Afro-American authors (Toni Morrison, Wangarĩ Maathai, Alice Walker), Indian authors (Vandana Shiva, Arundhati Roy), Native American heritage.
The 21st century community tends to bridge the gap between nature and culture, step back from dualism (an individual /society; employee / boss; man / woman; coloniser / the colonised; teacher / student; the elder / the young; human / animal); to rethink a correlation between the state and the citizen from duality toward integrity; to make the transition from ethics of power to ethics of care. Binaries rejection will allow us to move away from discrimination and exploitation towards equality, inclusion and overall integrity.
Literature, languages, arts and cinema provide linguists, literature scholars, philosophers, psychologists and sociologists with material for analysing mistakes of the past and outlining guidelines for the future. Analysis of ideas, problems, artistic images, characters (both carriers and antagonists of the ecofeminist mentality), and attention to the absence of ecofeminist values in those who discriminate, due to conflicts in creative works, contribute to better understanding of situations in reality. This will help bring the community closer to harmonious communication in accordance with ethics-of-care ideals, without discrimination.
The conference aims was interpretation and awareness of the ideals and values of ethics of care or the lack thereof in linguistic material; in fiction and journalism; in television and film production; in virtual and live communication. Thinking in creativity, politics, ideology, democracy, education at the levels of communication in language, literature, cinema, art, psychology, sociology, pedagogy, and methods of teaching language and literature must gradually change.
The motivation of the personality is important (in our case, a Ukrainian patriot). Motivation absolutely denies control. Ukrainians of the 21st century must move towards social ecological changes in the process of rebuilding our country after the victory. It is important that the combination of ecological and feminist landmarks is aimed at improving human life. We raise the problem: guaranteeing the protection of the individual in various hypostasis (state, biological, natural, social, professional, private). Ecofeminism is oriented towards changing the consciousness of a personality in the 21st century taking into account the interests of everyone. This is a civilized dialogue. For change, it is necessary to cultivate social ecological thinking — a caring attitude.
Universities influence the upbringing of social ecological thinking, humanism of the 21st century. We educate in the process of teaching language, literature, history, sociology, pedagogy.
