Department of Design

The Department of Design was created in 2003. Themajor 022 “Design” is accredited with the first and second education degrees: bachelor, master. The field of study for students majoring in Design is 02: Culture and Arts, the professional directions are “Graphic Design,” “Environmental Design,” “Apparel Design.”

Thefirsthead of the Department, from September 2003 to October 2012, was Y. V. Chebotova, docent, Candidate of Psychology, member of the National Union of Artists of Ukraine.

Between 2012 and December 2016, the Department was headed by U. P. Melnikova, docent, Candidate of Art History, member of the National Union of Artists of Ukraine.

Currently (since January 2017) the Department of Design is headed by L. S. Hryhorova, docent, Candidate of Pedagogy, member of the Union of Designers of Ukraine, member of the jury at young designers’ competitions.

TheDepartmentemploys 6 docent, including 1 PhD., 3 Candidates, 1 senior lecturer, 2 lecturers. 4 assistants help to support the teaching and methodological process.

The Department’s professors have memberships in Ukrainian art unions and professional associations: the Union of Designers of Ukraine, the National Union of Artists of Ukraine.

The Department’s professors have trained at Schiller International University, Germany; WyższaSzkołaLingwistyczna, Poland; Kharkiv State Academy of Design and Arts. At the request of Chongqing University of Arts and Sciences, China, they hold master classes in Apparel Design and Environmental Design.

The main direction of scientific research at the Department of Design is “Education Space: The Theory and Methodology of Studying Design,” which seeks to provide students, as future professionals, with knowledge and skills adequate to today’s understanding of design.

Over the last five years, the Department staff prepared and published the following scientific and methodical papers: 2 monographs, 7 teaching guides, many methodological recommendations for all disciplines regarding various aspects of teaching design, and scholarly articles.

During this period, the Department’s professors trained a large number of professionals in Apparel Design, Graphic Design, and Environmental Design, which are highly qualified and employed both in Ukraine and abroad.

Alongside the students, our professors regularly take part in the major international, national, and specialized exhibitions, forums, festivals, workshops, seminars, and design contests in Ukraine.
