Department of world history

The Department of World History is a fundamental structural unit of H.S. Skovoroda Kharkiv National Pedagogical University that carries out educational, methodological, and research activities within the framework of the following academic programs:
• “History in Educational Institutions” (specialty 014.03 / A4.03 Secondary Education (History and Civic Education)) at the first (Bachelor’s) and second (Master’s) levels of higher education;
• “History and Social Studies in Educational Institutions” (specialty 014.03 / A4.03 Secondary Education (History and Civic Education)) at the first (Bachelor’s) level of higher education;
• the educational and research program “History and Archaeology” (specialty 032 / B9 History and Archaeology) at the third (educational and scientific, Doctoral) level of higher education.

The mission of the Department is to train educated, highly qualified teachers in the field of civic and historical education, as well as academic and research professionals who embody the Ukrainian national idea in harmony with European and global values. The Department aims to foster innovative thinking, conduct scholarly research, and promote pedagogical enlightenment to advance the national educational sphere, strengthen civil society in Ukraine, and facilitate integration into the European and global academic community.

Main Objectives of the Department

• To ensure high-quality fundamental and professional training of students at all levels of higher education ‒ Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral, in accordance with current requirements of the educational services market and licensing standards.
• To develop and systematically update educational programs, syllabi, teaching and methodological materials for the disciplines assigned to the Department, taking into account the needs of students and the prospects of pedagogical education and science; to enhance informational support and digitalization of core processes; and to apply innovative (interactive and information-based) teaching technologies in the educational process.
• To conduct research on contemporary issues in Ukrainian and world history and to implement research outcomes in both domestic and international academic discourse and educational practice.
• To promote international cooperation in the field of academic mobility and expand the participation of academic staff and students in national and international mobility programs.
• To implement initiatives aimed at educating well-rounded individuals in the spirit of patriotism and respect for the Constitution and state symbols of Ukraine within the context of the country’s statehood development.

Academic Staff and Research

The Department includes seven academic and teaching staff members, all holding academic degrees of Candidate of Sciences (PhD) and the academic title of Associate Professor.

The Department is currently implementing the research project “Current Issues in Ukrainian and World History” (State Registration No. 0121U100717, dated 20 January 2021).

The main research areas of the Department’s faculty include: the history of education and science; historical regional studies; the history of everyday life; ethnic, social, cultural, and gender history; the history of international relations; European studies; Oriental studies; national and patriotic education of youth; and innovative methods of teaching history, civic education, and social studies in secondary and higher education institutions.
